Make the Grid Work for You: How Alberta’s Micro-Generation Regulation Empowers Solar Homeowners

Make the Grid Work for You: How Alberta’s Micro-Generation Regulation Empowers Solar Homeowners

Thinking about going solar in Alberta? Here’s a key incentive you need to know about: Alberta’s Micro-Generation Regulation. This progressive policy allows homeowners and businesses to not only power their own properties with solar energy but also sell excess electricity back to the grid.

At NOVU Renewables, we’re all about making solar simple and accessible. That’s why we’re breaking down this regulation, how it works, and why it’s a huge win for homeowners looking to save (or even earn) money while embracing clean energy.

🔌 What is Micro-Generation?

Micro-generation refers to small-scale renewable electricity production for your own use, typically from solar panels. But the game-changer? When your solar system produces more electricity than your home or business needs, you can export the surplus back to the grid — and receive credit or compensation for it.

This is done through net billing, meaning your utility provider tracks your energy exports and deducts that amount from your bill. Some retailers even offer cash payments for excess power.

Learn more about Alberta’s program on the official government page.

Key Benefits of Alberta’s Micro-Generation Regulation

  • Earn credits or income by exporting unused solar energy

  • Offset high electricity bills during the winter months

  • Support Alberta’s clean energy goals and reduce your carbon footprint

  • Use the grid like a battery, without needing costly storage systems

  • Boost your solar ROI by getting paid for what you don’t use

Who Qualifies?

To qualify as a micro-generator in Alberta, you must meet a few key criteria:

  • Your system must be sized to meet your site’s annual energy needs

  • It must use renewable or alternative energy (solar, wind, etc.)

  • You must be connected to the grid via a regulated utility (like ENMAX, FortisAlberta, etc.)

Systems under 150 kW are classified as small micro-generators, and those above that (up to 5 MW) fall under the large category. Most residential solar installations fall well within the small micro-generator range.

How Do I Get Compensated?

Your utility will measure the electricity you export with a bi-directional meter. You’ll then receive credit or compensation depending on your energy retailer. Some popular providers offer different buy-back rates, so it’s worth shopping around or asking your NOVU Renewables rep for guidance.

Many of our customers are surprised to find that their systems pay for themselves faster thanks to micro-generation. Especially in sunny Calgary, excess production is common during spring and summer months.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

Energy prices in Alberta have become increasingly unpredictable, and more people are looking for ways to take control. With over 300 days of sun per year, Calgary is one of the best places in Canada to go solar.

Pairing this sunny advantage with the micro-generation program and options like the Canada Greener Homes Loan (offering up to $40,000 in 0% interest financing), it’s easy to see why solar is gaining serious momentum in Alberta.

We Make It Easy to Understand

NOVU Renewables is different. We lead with education, not sales pressure. Our mission is to make solar understandable, approachable, and rewarding — no jargon, no guesswork.

We’re here to explain:

  • How solar impacts your energy bill

  • What you’ll earn from exporting power

  • How to navigate available incentives and programs
